For this project the main purpose was to design a guest house connected to an existing dwelling and a backyard, which was also requested to be modified.
In order to preserve the pepper and palm trees, which give an abundant shade and charm to this Los Angeles backyard, we were limited to build the guesthouse only on the existing garage’s footprint. A two story solution was opted to fit the required programs. The interior spaces were optimized by filling the two ends with functions such as kitchen, bathroom, stairs and storage. This allows for maximum flexibility in the middle to be used as bedroom and living space that extends into the garden.
The proposed landscape uses concrete pavers as a connection between the residences, maintaining it as an accessible and practical surface for a family with two dogs. The facade is a result of strategic openings to the existing trees and landscape as well as providing a visual connection between the indoor spaces to the outdoor activities.
